Introduction to the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys, often referred to simply as “the Cowboys,” is a professional American football team based in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Established in 1960 as an expansion team, the Cowboys quickly grew in popularity and success, becoming one of the most valued sports franchises globally today.

In their rich history, the Cowboys have achieved significant success, including numerous Super Bowl appearances and wins, contributing heavily to the overall appeal and allure of the team for fans worldwide. This enormous popularity has earned them the nickname “America’s Team,” a moniker they’ve mostly lived up to over their more than six-decade existence.

The Early Years of the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys entered the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion team in 1960. Clint Murchison Jr., a Texas oil tycoon, was the team’s first owner, and Tom Landry was hired as the first head coach, a position he would hold for 29 years. Despite initial struggles, particularly in the club’s inaugural season, the Cowboys developed into a competitive force.

The team did not have a winning season until their 6th year of competition; however, from that point forward, they became a dominant force in the NFL. The Dallas Cowboys would win their first of five Super Bowl titles on January 16, 1972, in Super Bowl VI against the Miami Dolphins.

Notable Dallas Cowboys Players

Throughout their history, the Dallas Cowboys have fielded numerous players who have made significant contributions to the team’s victories and the sport in general. Heading the pack are figures such as Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin, among others – all of whom are inductees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Each player brought a unique element to the team, allowing the Cowboys to dominate during different periods of their existence.
