Theresa May, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, served from July 13, 2016, to July 24, 2019. Her leadership was marked by significant challenges, including the execution of Brexit – the UK’s departure from the European Union. May’s time in office was characterized by political battles both within her party and the country, attempts at negotiation with the EU, and social policy initiatives.
Early Political Career and Rise to Power
Before becoming Prime Minister, Theresa May had a lengthy political career. Elected as the Member of Parliament for Maidenhead in 1997, she held several positions within the Conservative Party. May served as the Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2002 to 2003 and held various shadow cabinet positions when her party was in opposition.
Her prominent government roles included serving as Home Secretary from 2010 until becoming Prime Minister in 2016 under David Cameron’s premiership. May’s efforts to negotiate a Brexit deal proved to be one of her most formidable challenges. Over several months, her government worked alongside EU officials to craft a withdrawal agreement. Despite reaching an agreement with the EU, May faced significant opposition at home.
The core points of contention surrounding her deal included future trade relations with the EU, rights for UK and EU citizens post-Brexit, and particularly the “Irish backstop” – an insurance policy to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. Theresa May presented her deal to Parliament three times, each time encountering defeat.

Following repeated failures to pass her Brexit deal through Parliament, May’s leadership came into question not just nationally but within her own party. She faced a vote of no-confidence which she won; however support within her party continued to dwindle.
The impasse over Brexit led to mounting pressure, both from public sentiment shifting around Brexit deals and how they were being handled by May’s leadership. Amidst this pressure, May announced her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party on May 24, 2019, paving the way for a new leader who would take on the task of delivering Brexit.
