Introduction to Mike Norvell

Mike Norvell, born October 11, 1981, is an American college football coach. He is currently the head coach at Florida State University, a position he has held since December 2019. Prior to that, Norvell enjoyed a successful stint at the University of Memphis, where he headed the football program from 2016-2019.

Early Life and Playing Career

Norvell was born and raised in Irving, Texas. He attended the prestigious Central High School, where he began to show aptitude in football. He distinguished himself as a wide receiver, helping his team reach multiple state championships.

Upon graduating high school, he proceeded to the University of Central Arkansas, where he played as a four-year starting wide receiver from 2001 to 2005. During his college career, he earned an All-America honorable mention, essentially kick-starting his moving trajectory in the American football sport.

Coaching Career

Norvell set his sights on a coaching position soon after finishing his playing career. He started as a graduate assistant at Central Arkansas, before moving to the University of Tulsa as a wide receivers coach. His next career move was at the University of Pittsburgh, advancing to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Norvell’s rise continued in 2012, taking on the role of offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and assistant head coach for Arizona State University. His abilities did not go unnoticed, and he was heralded for his work transforming the Sun Devils’ offense into one of the most potent in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

In 2015, the University of Memphis appointed Norvell as their head coach. Here, he significantly impacted the team, leading the Tigers to one of the most successful periods in their history. In 2018, Norvell’s coach rank rose significantly, leading the Tigers to an American Athletic Conference championship, the first in the program history.

When the Florida State Seminoles’ coaching position opened in 2019, Norvell was quick to secure the role, demonstrating his readiness to take on the challenge of rebuilding a team with a proud and prestigious history.

Coaching Style

Norvell’s success largely lies in his coaching style. Known for his aggressive play-calling and penchant for throwing the ball downfield, Norvell has shown a willingness to take risks if it means giving his team a potential scoring opportunity. His squad often features an up-tempo, no-huddle style of play that keeps defenses on their heels.

Off the field, Norvell is equally effective. He is deeply committed to his players’ development and leadership skills, preparing his teams for success not only on the playing field but also in the life course after football.

Challenges and Triumphs

Like any coach, Norvell has faced his share of challenges. For instance, at the start of his tenure at Florida State University, he had to tackle the task of rebuilding a once-mighty team that had lost its edge. Dealing with high expectations from passionate and dedicated fans also created pressure and scrutiny.

Nonetheless, his triumphs continue to leave their mark. His work in reestablishing the Seminoles’ competitive status is commendable, and his record at Memphis speaks volumes about his ability to develop a winning program.
