Early Life
Amy Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, in the suburb of Southgate, in north London. She came from a family with a rich history in jazz; her father, Mitchell “Mitch” Winehouse was a window panel installer and a taxi driver, and her mother, Janis Winehouse (nee Seaton) was a pharmacist. Her grandmother was Cynthia, and she shared her love of jazz with young Amy. Winehouse grew up listening to her parent’s collection of jazz records and developed an early singing talent. By the age of ten, Winehouse started her own group—the rap ensemble, Sweet ‘n’ Sour. Despite her young age, Winehouse was already beginning to develop her own unique voice.
Career
In the early 2000s, Winehouse started performing in small venues and playing guitar in her friends’ bands. By 2003, she released her first album “Frank,” with influences from the likes of Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. This marked the beginning of her public acknowledgment, getting nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her second album, “Back to Black,” achieved even greater success. It led to her receiving five Grammy awards in 2008, setting a record for most wins by a female artist in a single night.
Legacy
Amy Winehouse is remembered for reviving British female soul music.
